Hula Hoops in Jug and Glass

I further experimented with the notion of putting things in containers which they wouldn't normally be. Here I have put the hula hoops where the juice is meant to be, and the juice in the hula hoops packet. I didn't feel that this went too well, as the clear glass removes any sense of ambiguity from the piece which is what i am searching for. I quite liked the contrast of textures in the packet one, however i felt that the hula hoops and the glass were too similar as they are both brittle.

Drawing pins in shot glass

I started experimenting with the idea of putting things in containers that aren't meant to be there. I was trying to think of  polar opposites in terms of the properties of the materials, pins are a lot different to the shot glass.

Mugs in Bathroom Sink

I carried on exploring the notion of putting things in places that they would not normally go. In my previous works I have focused on using contrasting physical properties and textures, but in this piece I wanted to see what would happen if chose the opposite of this. Its is very common to find mugs in a kitchen sink, but to find them in a bathroom sink is almost unheard of. I suppose it's the fact that at first glance the viewer may not see anything out of the ordinary that is the biggest difference from the other pieces. It was only after i'd looked that the picture for a while that I made some of these connections.

Flat Rearrangement

Flat living room, rearranged furniture.

From doing the laundry basket sculpture I noticed that it was kind of strange to have CD's in a laundry basket, like who would ever put them there? So I thought I would see if anything comes out of putting things where they're not meant to be. My tutor suggested taking things from certain rooms and putting them into one concentrated place, packing them in as tightly as possible. I decided to put all the furniture in my uni living room into the center of the room, first I tried putting all of the chairs in the middle but then I took a few away and revealed this weirdly aesthetically pleasing arrangement.

Laundry basket with blank CD's

CDs, laundry basket

Add artist to this ---Using what I'd discovered from the previous sculptures I began specifically choosing the items, as opposed to arbitrarily selecting them from my bag or room. I chose to put CDs as they are have a very different textural quality to the wicker basket, I wanted to give the impression that the whole laundry basket was full of CDs, almost like a reverse of Tony Cragg's 'stack' or 'Axehead' as they are all about exposing what is there and my piece is about hiding it.

Carton Sculpture and Box Sculpture

Carton Sculpture and Box Sculpture, Various possessions.

I began to develop from my initial dense/made sculptures and looked into arranging things into boxes, I found the items inside my bag. The idea of these was to force out the air from the space, and to make you wonder what's underneath. I took inspiration from Tony Cragg's 'Stack' for the way the objects fit together. I was playing with the idea of the objects only being able to fit in that particular way.

Sculpture: Dense, Made

For our sculpture project we were given a series of adjectives, we had to choose two from these. I chose 'Dense' and 'Made'. After spending time in the library researching these two words in the context of sculpture I discovered the artist Michael Johansson, who creates sculptures out of household items, taking away any previous purpose the object had. I have been looking at how the objects' primary purpose is just to fill a space. These are my first two explorations into this notion. I used items which I found in my bag for the first piece and items which I found in my student accommodation room for the second.
